E-E-A-T: experience, expertise, authority and trust

By Stefan Hendriks

E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust. It is the framework Google and AI use to judge whether your content can be trusted. Read on to see how you score on it.

Why does a search engine or AI trust one source more than another? Google sums it up in four letters: E-E-A-T. It stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trust. It is not a button, but a framework that determines how credible your content is.

What does E-E-A-T mean?

The first E is Experience: has the creator actually been through or done something themselves? The second E is Expertise: does the creator have demonstrable subject knowledge? The A is Authoritativeness: are you recognised by others as a source? The T is Trust: is your site reliable, transparent and correct? Together they determine your credibility.

Why has this become more important?

In an age where AI can produce endless text, demonstrable human credibility becomes a distinguishing signal. Search engines and AI do not want to cite just any text, but trustworthy sources. E-E-A-T is the compass with which they assess reliability.

An example

An article about foundation repair written by an experienced structural engineer, with a name, biography, real project examples and mentions elsewhere, scores high on all four elements. An anonymous, generic piece with no substantiation scores low. The first is more readily trusted and cited.

How do you strengthen E-E-A-T?

By showing real experience, making expertise visible through recognisable authors, building authority with external mentions, and inspiring trust with transparency, correct details and a well-kept site. It touches on author authority, entity recognition and consistent presence. E-E-A-T is, in effect, the sum of many things we discuss on this site.
