Imagine going to Google, typing a question, and instead of ten blue links you get a detailed answer, followed by follow-up questions that Google asks itself. No more clicking. No comparison websites. No paid ads at the top. Just a conversation. That is Google AI Mode.
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a separate search experience within Google in which a large language model processes the query and gives a composed answer. It differs from AI Overviews in that the entire interface is built around a conversation. You can ask follow-up questions, refine, and the AI responds in context. It has rolled out in the US and is becoming available internationally in stages.
How does this differ from a regular Google search?
With a regular search, Google ranks pages and lets you choose. With AI Mode, Google decides for you what is relevant, draws information together from multiple sources and presents an answer. The individual websites that serve as sources are mentioned, but are less prominent.
What are the consequences for businesses?
Click-through rates fall further. Anyone not recognised as a source by the AI system behind Google AI Mode disappears from view. At the same time it offers opportunities: if you have the clearest, most factual and best-structured page on a topic, you increase the chance that Google picks you as a source in this new format.
What can you do right now?
Make sure your pages answer concrete questions, use structured data and write for people looking for an answer, not for an algorithm that counts links. That is the foundation for visibility in AI Mode.
