Content clusters: the hub-and-spoke method for maximum findability

By Stefan Hendriks

A content cluster is a structure where a central page (the hub) is surrounded by in-depth pages (the spokes). Together they form a strong, coherent whole that search engines and AI understand. Read on.

Many websites are a collection of isolated pages with no clear coherence. That is a missed opportunity. A content cluster brings structure: a central page that covers the topic, surrounded by in-depth pages that each treat a sub-aspect. This model is called hub and spoke.

What is a content cluster?

A content cluster consists of a hub page and several spoke pages. The hub is the broad overview of a topic. The spokes are in-depth pages on sub-topics, all linking back to the hub and to each other. Together they form a coherent whole.

A concrete example

Say your hub page is about buying a home in The Hague. Your spokes are then: buying in the Statenkwartier, buying in Benoordenhout, the buying process step by step, and the cost of a buying agent. Each spoke is a complete page in its own right, but they reinforce one another within the cluster.

Why does this work so well?

For search engines and AI, a cluster makes clear that you fully master a topic. The internal links show the coherence. The hub gains authority because the spokes point to it. The whole cluster radiates expertise. This is the practical execution of topical authority.

What does this mean for your website?

Instead of publishing isolated pages at random, you deliberately build clusters around your most important topics. That is how you transform a website from a collection of pages into a recognisable authority.
