You can write a brilliant page on a subject and still not be found. Why? Because search engines and AI do not look at a single page, but at your total expertise on a subject. That is called topical authority.
What is topical authority?
Topical authority is the degree to which a website is seen as a leading source on a specific subject. It arises when you do not touch on a subject superficially, but treat it in full breadth and depth, with multiple connected pages.
An example
An estate agency that only has a general services page has little authority. An agency that has separate, in-depth pages on every neighbourhood, every type of property and every step in the buying process builds demonstrable authority. Search engines and AI recognise that whole as expertise.
How do you build it?
You choose a core subject and cover all the sub-topics that belong to it. You connect those pages with internal links. You ensure consistency in terminology and facts. This creates a network of content that together radiates one message: the expertise is here.
Why is this crucial for AI?
AI systems cite sources they trust. Trust arises from proven depth. A website with strong topical authority on a subject has a demonstrably greater chance of being cited than a competitor with fragmented content.
