Zero-click: how do you stay visible when nobody clicks any more?

By Stefan Hendriks

Zero-click means a user gets an answer from Google or an AI without ever clicking a website. Research shows that 68% of Google searches now end without a click. What does this mean for your online strategy? Read on.

For years the goal of SEO was simple: rank as high as possible so that people click your link. That logic is cracking. More and more often, Google answers questions directly on the search page itself, through snippets, knowledge panels, AI Overviews and AI Mode. The user no longer needs to click through. They already have their answer. We call this zero-click.

What do the numbers say?

Research by SparkToro shows that only 276 of every 1,000 Google searches end with a click to an external website. That means 68% of all searches are zero-click. This percentage grows as AI Overviews and AI Mode roll out further.

Is zero-click always bad?

Not by definition. If your brand or business is mentioned in an AI answer, even without a click, you build brand awareness. The user has seen your name. On a later direct search or recommendation, that can tip the balance. Visibility without a click has value, provided you are the right source.

How do you adjust your strategy?

First: focus on brand mentions, not just clicks. Second: make sure you are cited as a source in AI answers, because that is the new position 1. Third: invest in channels beyond Google, such as email, social media and a directly findable presence in AI tools. Fourth: use your website not only as a traffic channel but as a reputation source that AI systems can come to know.

The strategic lesson

The question is no longer only how many people click your link. The question is also: who names you as the answer? That is the new battle for attention.
