Semantic SEO: writing for meaning, not for keywords

By Stefan Hendriks

Semantic SEO is not about isolated keywords, but about meaning and coherence. Search engines and AI now understand context, not just words. Whoever writes about a topic instead of around a keyword wins. Read on.

SEO used to be a game of keywords. You picked a term, repeated it as often as possible, and hoped for a high position. That time is over. Modern search engines and AI systems understand meaning. They grasp that buying agent, purchasing a home and house hunting are connected. That is the essence of semantic SEO.

What is semantic SEO?

Semantic SEO is optimising content based on meaning and coherence, rather than isolated keywords. You treat a topic in its full breadth, with attention to related concepts, questions and context. This way a search engine or AI recognises that your page is genuinely about the topic, not just that it happens to contain the right words.

How does this work in practice?

Say you write a page about a renovation. Instead of repeating the word renovation fifteen times, you cover permits, costs, contractors, planning and frequently asked questions. This creates a rich, coherent whole that AI systems recognise as an authority on the topic.

Why does this work better?

AI systems work with embeddings: they convert meaning into mathematical patterns. The more complete and coherent your content, the stronger that pattern. A page that fully covers a topic is more likely to be seen as a trustworthy source than a page that merely chases a keyword.

What does this mean for you?

Stop thinking in isolated keywords. Start thinking in topics and the questions your audience asks about them. That is the foundation of findability in the AI age.
