We used to train ourselves to search in keywords: estate agent The Hague cheap. Unnatural, but that was simply how the search engine worked. With AI that is changing. People now ask full, natural questions, as if speaking to a person. That is called conversational search.
What is conversational search?
Conversational search is asking questions in natural, everyday language, often in the form of a conversation with follow-up questions. Instead of isolated keywords, someone types or speaks a complete question, and can then ask follow-ups, just as in a real conversation.
How does this change search behaviour?
Questions become longer, more specific and more personal. Someone no longer asks estate agent The Hague, but which estate agent in The Hague specialises in listed homes and has good reviews? The question contains context, conditions and intent. That calls for content that fits those richer questions.
An example
A potential customer asks an AI: I am looking for a painting company in The Hague that has experience with wood rot on old window frames, who would you recommend? A company with a clear page describing exactly this specialism fits such a conversational question seamlessly and is far more likely to be named.
What does this mean for you?
Write content that answers real questions, in natural language, including the context and conditions people mention. Think about how your audience actually talks and asks. Whoever tunes their content to conversational search aligns with the way people look for information now and in the future.
