Context window: an AI's working memory

The context window is the amount of information an AI can process and hold in mind at once. It determines how much of your content can be taken in at the same time. Read on.

An AI has a kind of working memory. It can only hold and oversee a certain amount of information at once. That space is called the context window. Understanding it helps explain why the way your content is built up matters.

What is a context window?

The context window is the maximum amount of text, measured in tokens, that an AI can process and consider coherently at once. Everything within that window the system can oversee directly and relate to one another. Whatever falls outside it, it does not see at that moment.

Why is this relevant?

When an AI uses your content to answer a question, it often takes in only part of it within its context window. The clearer and more self-contained your most important information is built, the greater the chance that the relevant part is taken in fully and understood correctly.

An example

Say an AI retrieves a fragment of your page to answer a question. If the crucial answer is scattered across the whole page, part of it may fall outside the retrieved fragment. If the answer sits compactly and completely together, it fits in its entirety within the window.

What does this mean for you?

Build your content in self-contained, complete blocks. Make sure an answer to a question can be found in full in one place, not fragmented across the page. This increases the chance that an AI takes in the right, complete answer within its context window.
