Google has drastically increased the number of external links within AI Overview responses. Where previously almost no AI Overviews contained direct links within the generated summary, over 25 per cent of AI responses now feature clickable external links. This is according to recent data from AI monitoring platform Peec AI.
Until now, AI Overviews primarily displayed separate source cards to the side or above the response. In many cases, this led to so-called ‘zero-click’ searches, where users read the AI summary without clicking through to the source sites.
With this update, Google directly links specific facts and claims in the text to the original source via in-line hyperlinks. For business owners and marketers, this changes the playing field. It means that a mention in an AI Overview is no longer just a passive brand mention, but can once again become a direct source of organic traffic. If your content is specific and valuable enough to be cited by the model, you get a prominent link right where the user is reading.
Opportunities for higher click-through rates
Although Google does not disclose the exact workings of the algorithm, this change aligns with the growing need for transparency in AI responses. Consequently, pages offering in-depth data, clear definitions, or unique insights stand a significantly better chance of driving click-throughs directly from the text itself.
What does this mean for you?
To benefit from this update to Google AI Overviews, a targeted approach to Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is essential:
- Write quotable paragraphs: Provide clear, factual answers of 40 to 60 words directly beneath your subheadings. AI models are quicker to pick these up and cite them as in-line links.
- Focus on unique data and expert quotes: General information is summarised by the AI model itself without a link. However, unique figures, research findings, and expert perspectives are much more likely to receive a direct hyperlink.
- Optimise your structured data: Help Google understand who the author is and where the facts originate by using schema markup (such as
ArticleandClaimReview).
By better tailoring your content to how AI models select sources, you not only boost your visibility, but also drive actual visitors back to your website.
