GEO study: external sources determine your AI visibility

Two new GEO experiments show that mentions on external websites are decisive for your visibility in AI search engines.

New findings from two structured GEO experiments are shaking up conventional advice on AI discoverability. Whilst many marketers are obsessed with optimising their own websites, the key to AI visibility appears to lie elsewhere. External mentions on third-party platforms carry more weight with AI models than content managed on your own domain.

The studies monitored 15 commercial search queries across platforms such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Analysing 775 citations revealed that ChatGPT cited by far the most sources (148 citations), followed by Claude (96), Gemini (87) and Perplexity (64). However, the most frequently cited sources were not brand-owned pages, but comprehensive roundup articles (listicles) and news items on external platforms.

Why external authority wins in AI search queries

Large Language Models (LLMs) are designed to generate answers based on patterns in vast amounts of data. When a user asks for the best software or service within your sector, the AI relies more readily on an independent third-party site comparing multiple providers than on your own sales or product page.

This means traditional SEO tactics — such as publishing articles on your own blog — are no longer enough to get recommended by AI assistants. Your brand needs to be present in the specific places where AI models source their information.

What does this mean for you?

If you want ChatGPT or Perplexity to recommend your business when potential customers search for your product category, you need to adjust your strategy:

  • Focus on digital PR and guest blogging: Secure mentions and reviews on authoritative comparison sites, trade media publications and industry blogs.
  • Optimise external listicles: Identify which comparison articles currently appear at the top of AI answers and ensure your brand is included in them.
  • Analyse citation sources: Test relevant queries in ChatGPT and Perplexity to see which sources they cite. Target your link-building and PR efforts specifically at those external domains.

Ultimately, the essence of GEO is not just making your own site AI-friendly, but above all ensuring that the network surrounding your brand reinforces your authority.
