OpenAI and review platform Yelp have signed a licensing agreement. As a result, ChatGPT gains direct access to real-time data from millions of local businesses, including customer reviews, photos and specific business details. For local queries in ChatGPT, Yelp reviews and links to the relevant profiles will now be explicitly displayed. Soon, users will even be able to request a quote from local service providers directly from the chat interface via Yelp’s “Request a Quote” feature.
The shift towards external data sources
Until recently, ChatGPT relied mainly on general web crawls and standard search results for local recommendations. This partnership demonstrates that AI assistants are increasingly drawing on structured data and the authority of established platforms.
For business owners and marketers, this changes the dynamics of Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO). AI systems do not just look at what is on your own website; they directly query external sources containing verified reviews and structured information. If you lack a strong profile on the platforms AI developers are striking deals with, you risk losing a significant portion of your visibility when consumers ask an AI assistant for advice.
What does this mean for you?
OpenAI’s move highlights that AI discoverability goes beyond traditional search engine optimisation (SEO) of your own web domain. To adapt to this now, here is what you can do:
- Claim and optimise external platform profiles: Ensure your business information, services and opening hours are consistent across major platforms and directories (such as Yelp, Apple Maps and industry-specific directories).
- Encourage verified reviews: Because AI models use external reviews to assess quality and trustworthiness, up-to-date customer feedback is crucial for your AI recommendations.
- Use clear structured data: Implement LocalBusiness Schema.org markup on your own website so that direct web crawlers accurately understand your location, offerings and contact options.
AI searches are becoming not just informational, but increasingly transactional. By ensuring a strong presence on both your own website and relevant external platforms, you will remain discoverable wherever your customers are searching.
